Background of the Study
Pediatric emergencies, such as respiratory distress, seizures, and trauma, require rapid and effective intervention to prevent mortality and long-term disabilities. Nurses, as primary caregivers in emergency departments, are often responsible for initial assessments, interventions, and stabilization of pediatric patients. Their preparedness to handle these emergencies is crucial to improving outcomes.
In Benue State, where healthcare resources may be limited, the level of preparedness among nurses to manage pediatric emergencies is of great concern. This study will evaluate nurses' knowledge, skills, and confidence in managing pediatric emergencies and assess the adequacy of training and resources available to them.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of nurses in pediatric emergencies, there may be gaps in their preparedness due to insufficient training, limited resources, and a lack of specialized pediatric care. This study aims to identify the factors contributing to these gaps and propose strategies to improve nurses’ preparedness in handling pediatric emergencies in Benue State hospitals.
Objectives of the Study
To assess nurses' knowledge and preparedness in handling pediatric emergencies in Benue State hospitals.
To evaluate the availability of resources and training for managing pediatric emergencies in these hospitals.
To propose strategies for improving nurses’ preparedness in handling pediatric emergencies in Benue State.
Research Questions
What is the level of nurses’ knowledge and preparedness in handling pediatric emergencies in Benue State hospitals?
What resources and training are available to nurses for managing pediatric emergencies in these hospitals?
What strategies can be implemented to improve nurses’ preparedness in handling pediatric emergencies?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses in Benue State hospitals are inadequately prepared to handle pediatric emergencies.
Insufficient training and resources limit nurses' ability to manage pediatric emergencies effectively.
Implementing targeted training programs and improving resource allocation will enhance nurses' preparedness for pediatric emergencies.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in hospitals in Benue State that manage pediatric emergencies. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing certain hospitals due to geographical or logistical constraints.
